On Jan. 9, community members will explore relationships through the song lyrics of Bob Marley with Dr. Kim Bateman as part of the engaging Sierra College Insights series. From the blissful state of Marley’s “One Love” to the impetus to “Get Up, Stand Up, Stand Up for Your Rights,” many people have experienced relationships that transition from oneness to separation.

“With wisdom, relationships may progress to the state of rapprochement or a mature re-establishment of respectful connectivity,” said Kim Bateman, Ph.D., psychology professor and Executive Dean of Sierra College, Tahoe-Truckee. Using psychological theory, a folk tale and good-natured humor, Bateman will outline the tasks inherent in practicing the art of reconciliation. Emphasis is placed both on negotiating tensions in organizational cultures and personal relationships.

Participants may find themselves singing along with the progression of stages, joining in the final phase, which is where “We’re Jammin’.” “Tapping into the universal messages shared in Bob Marley’s lyrics will provide a fascinating platform for us to discuss relationships,” adds Bateman, whose research interests include bereavement, humor, and organizational psychology.

Known for her engaging and entertaining style, she has presented 64 research projects in the social and behavioral sciences at regional and national conferences and delivered several notable keynote addresses, including: “There’s a fox under my bed and pixie dust in my hair,” at the Developmental Psychology Conference and “The Psychology of Humor” at the Women’s Wellness Conference. She recently presented a TEDx talk called “Singing Over Bones” and is the author of a book by the same title (anticipated release, March, 2015).

Seating for the 7-8:15 p.m. program on Friday, Jan. 9, is limited. Reservations are highly recommended, and can be made at sierracollege.ticketleap.com. The event is free. Four sessions remain in the 2014-15 Sierra College Insights series; the next is cheduled for Feb. 6: “Four million dollars for 30 seconds: Are Super Bowl Ads worth it?” with Kurt Heisinger, CPA, MBA.
